When firefighters enter a burning building, they take lots of protective gear with them so that they don’t get hurt. They have an oxygen tank that they carry on their back and with the use of a mask they are able to have clean air to breathe and not the smoke from the fire. Firefighters also wear helmets so that if something collapses on them, their head is protected. They wear sturdy boots so they don’t slip and fall. Their clothes are made of a special flame-retardant material. Firefighters even carry axes sometimes so that they can get through walls and doors to help people. This equipment allows the fireman to effectively do his job all the while keeping him safe.

Firefighters drive special trucks known as fire engines which are designed to help them fight fires. These engines have huge turntable ladders mounted on them that allow them to reach high areas. This allows them to pour water on any fires that are high up, and even help people escape from buildings. There are many different types of fire trucks. Tanker trucks are used to transports lots of water, rescue engines or rescue pumpers are typical fire trucks that are used for most fires, heavy duty rescue trucks are designed for rescue situations, and hook and ladder trucks have a special turntable ladder mounted on them that has separate steering for front and back wheels.
